Telemetry

Energy Metering Technology Ltd (EMT) was formed in 1993 by Colin Boughton-Smith to provide ‘turnkey’ solutions for energy and water management by the use of emerging technology advances in metering and communication systems. The company developed its own technology to support customer requirements and has evolved products and services to meet the ever increasing interest in energy management among corporations and government.

The Brief

EMT needed a partner to support them in the development of a new GPRS & Ethernet logger solution to integrate with their existing range of EMT monitoring units and backend analysis tools. This needed to be a remotely manageable, scalable solution that was adaptive to its particular installation and robust to the varying implementations and signal conditions of GPRS networks.

The Solution

Fen worked with EMT’s engineering team to identify key system behavioural requirements. To reduce risk, time and cost, Fen then implemented a design using an off the shelf development platform that gave a good degree of configurability and reliability. Protection of data and its integrity was key to a successful outcome; this was the focus of both the development phase and the lab testing with follow up field trials supported by Fen.

The Skills and Experience Used

  • System - Analysis of problem, specification development, and implementation and testing of solution.
  • Hardware – Debug of development hardware and integration issues.
  • Software – Real-time embedded application development and test. Integration support with backend central-office telemetry system.
  • Test & Production – Management of lab soak-testing and support for field-trial testing. Documentation support for unit production.

Comment

Fen have impressed us with how they have created a solution that has met both EMT’s needs of integration with our existing infrastructure and way of working, and provided a high quality feature enhancement to our product range
